I was explaining to the oldest how after I graduated from college I made a list of all the things I had done the previous year and then made another list of things I wanted to do in the new year. I kept those lists in my wallet and had accumulated several of them, but after my purse was stolen, I got out of the habit of keeping a written list around.
I never called the items on my list of things I wanted to do resolutions. Nah. They were more fun than a resolution. One year I listed that I wanted to learn how to ride a horse. So, I called a stable and arranged lessons. I took them for about a year, but ended up stopping when I needed to save that extra money for my wedding.
It may be time to begin that tradition again. While the house is quiet and everyone is still asleep, I can sit here, enjoy my coffee, recap 2012, and come up with a short list of things I'd like to do in 2013.
2013 is upon us and a whole year of days is ahead. May those days be filled with more joy than sadness and more good than bad. Happy New Year!
Random thoughts on my writing journey, what I'm reading, my family, and my community. All before that first cup of coffee.

the year in review
Of course, my kids and hubby achieved a variety of amazing things this past year, but I'm going to be 'self centered' and focus on the big things that impacted me in 2011 as we edge closer to a new year.
The biggest thing was my return to the paid workforce in April. After a brief and soul numbing stint at a regional bank, I landed a sweet job with a national science nonprofit. Thank goodness for that Big Ten degree, which, according to my boss, sealed the deal. I have perfect hours, a nice office, friendly coworkers and a boss who gets my Yankee humor and can talk basketball with the best of them. I. Lucked. Out. BIG TIME. Being thankful doesn't even begin to cover how I feel.
I wrapped up my two year role as president of the Friends of the Library. As a group, we continued to make money and supported our mission to have the best Library in the region. I've never been happier and so sad to have a 'job' end. It was time to move on, but what a wonderful experience the Friends were for me. And, I can still help them, in my own way, by doing their electronic newsletter and organizing the publicity for the book sales.
Even with my return to the workforce, I still managed to read over 50 books in 2011. No where near my high total of 100 titles, but a respectable number considering my obligations. And I'm entering the new year with a brand new Nook Tablet, thanks to my sweet hubby.
The year ahead will bring new challenges and adventures; opportunities for growth and learning. But, I'm in a good place as are the kids and hubby. 2011 is almost one for the books and 2012 is itching to roll on into our lives.
Time to begin anew. A new chance to get it, or at least most of it, right!

The new year list
Back in my 20's I'd make a list of things I'd like to do in the upcoming year. Not necessarily a list of resolutions, more of a wish list of goals, events and activities. I did that for several years and would squirrel away those pieces of notebook paper in my wallet. Unfortunately, that wallet was stolen in 1992 when hubby and I were visiting the library. Like a dunce I left my purse hanging on a chair while I returned a research book to a shelf. Stupid.
I haven't made a list like that since. Not sure what changed, except we began our family shortly thereafter and my self-focused wish list became 'mommified'. The focus of my attention took a sharp turn and headed down a road where my goals, events and activities center around the three unique people I parent.
That is not to say that I don't do things for myself. Not at all. I've done some wonderful things in the almost 17 years since I became a mommy.
Last year I set a goal for myself to read 100 books. I fell three books short, by my record keeping. A tremendous effort and a lot of fun. I read a lot of new to me authors and several books out of my comfort zone. I didn't do any fiction writing this past year, but did quite a bit of press release and newspaper writing on behalf of the Friends. And I kept blogging. Almost every weekday.
It is still all about the words for me. If not mine, then others.
As I enter 2011, which officially begins for me tomorrow when the kids head back to school, I'm going to sit down and put together a wish list again. Because writing things down matters.

happy new year
Happy New Year to all of you.....we woke to several inches of snow this morning. The trees are sugar coated with fluffy white stuff. Not sure if we received enough to change our plans as the navigator is still sleeping.
The kids would be happy to play in the yard.....she has a big yard and has invited them to jump all they want out there. They went sledding yesterday....with the Alps as a back drop. Scott said it was amazing. I opted to stay home and enjoy some quiet time, as did Patti. So, the ladies read books and the men took the "kinder" to the slopes.
May 2009 bring many good things to all of us.
