anita blake and edward are at it again

Just picked up Laurell K. Hamilton's latest Anita Blake novel, "Hit List." Best part of this book thus far is the fact that Edward is in it. I've always been so very intrigued by this character and his relationship with Anita.  I've stuck with Hamilton even though many reviewers and readers have become disenchanted with the plot choices/devices she's used in her stories. I'm anxious to see how this addition to the Anita storyline unfolds.

switching books

After my meeting at the library yesterday, I scanned the 'new book' shelf and came away with two titles. Then I drove to pick up hubby from the auto repair shop, had to wait a bit for him, and wound up reading. So, I have set aside "Agnes and the Hitman" for the moment so I can read Laurell K. Hamilton's latest Merry Gentry novel "Divine Misdemeanors."

Couldn't help myself. Once I got started in Merry's world, going back to the flamingo themed wedding shenanigans of Agnes' world just wasn't a priority! Merry has a mystery to solve, a pregnancy to cope with, as well as assorted other issues to deal with in this novel.

These books are always a quick read, so I figure I will be back to finish the Agnes book before the weekend is out.

Today is Costco day. I have a list, a plan and the will to get it done! Tonight is Winter Fest...first high school dance for the middle kid. She's excited as the the older one, should be a wild time as they hustle about getting ready to leave.

Sometimes my stubbornness is rewarded. Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series has gathered lots of fans over the years and some have been very vocal about how she's lost her touch, the stories aren't as good, too many characters, too much sex etc. I've even commented that more of the action was in the bedroom than on the streets, but I have to say, this book reverses that trend and was a good read.

"Skin Trade" is the 17th book featuring Anita and a fairly large cast of monsters...some are even human. Anita receives a package from Las Vegas, but this isn't the sort of package you are happy you opened. The Las Vegas vampire executioner's head has been mailed to her, a rather grisly invitation to hit the road and see what Vegas has to offer besides casinos and buffets. Hamilton brings Edward back into the story, as well as assorted other characters from previous books, but the star of this novel is the fact Anita gets to hunt down monsters without all the distractions her many St. Louis men provide.

I wouldn't suggest reading any of the Anita books out of order. A reader needs to follow Anita along and see how she grows, develops and responds to the increasingly preternatural world she inhabits. There is a definite overriding rollercoaster effect to this body of work and you need to get on this ride with book one.
